You Could Cut Your Own Fringe: Why Knowing Your Worth Means Knowing When to Ask for Help

Nobody posts about the tax return they got wrong. Nobody puts “I underpriced myself for three years” in their Instagram bio. The risks we take when we skip the professional advice, the proper rate tends to stay quiet. That is exactly why they feel so safe to take.

Cutting your own fringe is a low-stakes version of this. Worst case, you look a bit odd for six weeks, and you are googling how to fix it by nine that evening. But the same instinct, the “I will just wing it, how hard can it be,” shows up in places where the stakes are a lot higher.

The DIY decisions that feel free until they are not

The DIY tax return that does not gross income correctly or misses an expense you could have claimed. The website built in a weekend that never quite converts. The contract copied from a template that does not cover the one situation that actually happens. The brand built without a strategy that looks busy but does not grow.

None of these are stupid decisions. They are understandable ones. Time and money are tight, and doing it yourself feels free.

But “free” and “free of cost” are not the same thing. The real cost shows up later, in the fix, the missed opportunity, or the stress of not knowing if you got it right.

The double standard worth naming

There is something worth naming here. Many of us will happily pay for the professionals we believe in, our photographer, our VA, our brand designer, and then turn around and say we refuse to pay for an accountant, a solicitor, or a business coach because we built a system that practically does it for us.

But those are the same thing. If you charge for your expertise and expect to be paid what you are worth, the same logic applies to everyone else’s. A photographer who says “I refuse to pay for an accountant” is saying something they would never accept if a client said it about photography.

Expertise does not lose its value just because the end result looks straightforward.

It is not just about money

Paying for proper support is not a weakness or an extravagance. It is a personal choice, a long-term investment, and for a lot of the women we work with, it is genuine emotional support too.

Knowing someone has your back, that your numbers are right, your strategy makes sense, your contract protects you, is worth more than people talk about. We meet women who have been quietly carrying the cost of skipping that support for years. Not because they are careless. Because nobody told them there was a safer way, or because asking for help felt like admitting they could not manage.

You can manage. That was never really the question. The question is whether managing alone is serving you, or whether it is costing you time, money, or peace of mind that a bit of proper support would give straight back.

Knowing your worth cuts both ways

Knowing your worth includes knowing when a task is not really about willpower. It is about expertise you have not built yet, and that is completely fine. Nobody expects you to be the expert in everything.

Some things genuinely do not matter much if they go wrong. Others cost you far more than the professional would have. Either way, you deserve to make that choice with your eyes open.
